Environment of the Philippines

The Philippines is a beautiful island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean. It consists of about 7,641 islands which it is known for. Although with a nature that is beautiful, it still suffers from natural disasters.

As it lying astride in the typhoon belt, in the active volcanic region known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, and in the geologically unstable region between the Pacific and Eurasian tectonic plates, it is prone, in particular, to typhoons, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and tsunamis.

Also, the Philippines suffers from major human-caused environmental degradation which is aggravated by its high population growth rate.

Agricultural lands are lost due to deforestation, soil erosion, air and water pollution, improper disposal of solid and toxic wastes, loss of coral reefs, mismanagement and abuse of coastal resources, and over-fishing.
